What is a Shubh Muhurat and How is it Chosen?
The plain meaning of a shubh muhurat, the traditional panchang method, and the KP method — explained simply, without heavy jargon.
Fixing a wedding date, opening a new shop, moving into a new home — an elder in the family always says: get a good muhurat first. But what exactly is a muhurat? Let us understand it in the simplest words.
The plain meaning
A muhurat is a chosen good time to START something.
Astrology holds that the sky at the moment a work begins leaves its mark on the whole work. Just as a seed sown in the right season gives a better crop, a work begun in a good moment has a better chance to flourish.
Note the key word — start. The time of the wedding pheras, the first sale at a new shop, the first step into a new house. A muhurat never asks when the work will finish.
The traditional way: the Panchang
For centuries, muhurats have come from the panchang — the Hindu almanac. "Panch-ang" literally means five limbs:
- Tithi — the lunar day, from the waxing and waning of the Moon
- Vaar — the weekday
- Nakshatra — the star group the Moon occupies that day
- Yoga — a combination reckoned from the Sun and Moon together
- Karana — half of a tithi
The pandit weighs these five, removes the inauspicious spells (such as Rahu Kaal), and declares the good hours. The person's own birth star is matched too — which is why the same day can be excellent for one person and ordinary for another. That is why panchang muhurats look like lists of dates — "wedding muhurats this month: the 5th, 9th and 21st."
The KP way: a chart of the starting moment
KP astrology (Krishnamurti Paddhati) looks at muhurat a little differently. KP says — do not stop at the date; check the exact time and place too. The method:
- A full chart is cast for the moment and place where the work will begin — exactly like a birth chart. Think of it as the birth of the work.
- The chart is then tested: are the houses that rule this work strong? For a marriage, houses 2, 7 and 11 are examined; for a job, houses 2, 6, 10 and 11.
- One more thing is checked — will the work last? For that, the lagna (the first house) of the moment is judged.
So a KP muhurat says: "begin between 9:35 and 9:45 am on the 22nd" — not a whole lucky day, but a precise window within the day. And the same clock time can be good in Delhi yet not in Mumbai, because the lagna changes the moment the place changes.
The difference in one line
The panchang finds a good day; KP finds the good minutes within that day. Many families use both — a date from the panchang, and a precise window from a KP calculation.
What people take muhurats for
- Marriage and engagement
- Griha pravesh, buying land or a house
- Opening a shop or business
- The first day of a new job
- A child's school admission
- Starting a long journey
- A planned operation
One honest word
A muhurat is not magic. It cannot replace effort — it only makes the beginning favourable. A good approach: take the auspicious day from the panchang, and have the precise window worked out for your own city by an experienced astrologer. And for the big occasions — especially a wedding — matching the two charts matters as much as the clock.

Frequently asked questions
- Is a muhurat the same in every city?
- The panchang's tithi and nakshatra are broadly the same across India, but in the KP method the lagna changes with the place — so a precise muhurat should always be checked for your own city.
- What if I miss the muhurat?
- Nothing to fear. A muhurat favours the beginning, but the real strength of any work is your effort and preparation. Simply take the next good window and begin.
- Can a shubh muhurat fall at night?
- Yes. A good window can occur at any hour, day or night — it depends on the lagna and the planets of that moment, not on daylight.
- Which houses decide a marriage muhurat?
- In the KP method, houses 2 (family), 7 (spouse) and 11 (fulfilment of desire) are the main ones for marriage, along with the strength of the lagna itself.
