KP Astrology vs Vedic Astrology: The Key Differences Explained
What's the difference between KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati) and traditional Vedic astrology? A clear, practical guide to the two systems and when each is used.
If you have ever looked for an astrologer, you have probably seen two phrases again and again: Vedic astrology and KP astrology. They sound like rivals. In truth, KP grew out of Vedic astrology — it is a refinement, not a replacement. Understanding the difference helps you know what kind of answer to expect.
What is Vedic astrology?
Traditional Vedic astrology (Jyotish) is the classical Indian system, thousands of years old. It reads your Janam Kundli (birth chart) using the twelve houses, the nine planets (Navagraha), the twenty-seven nakshatras, and timing systems such as the Vimshottari Dasha. It is rich, layered and excellent for describing the broad shape of a life — character, strengths, the themes that will recur.
What is KP astrology?
KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati) was developed in the 20th century by the late Prof. K. S. Krishnamurti. Its goal was a single thing: precision. KP keeps the Vedic foundation but adds the sub-lord theory — each point in the zodiac is divided down to a very fine level, and the sub-lord of a house cusp decides whether an event will happen, and when.
Because of this, KP is famous for giving sharp, yes-or-no answers with clear timing, rather than general descriptions.
The practical differences
Here is how the two compare in everyday use:
- Style of answer — Vedic tends to describe tendencies ("marriage may face some delay"). KP aims to pin it down ("the chart supports marriage in this window").
- Tools — Vedic leans on houses, aspects and dashas. KP adds sub-lords, significators and the ruling planets method.
- Best for — Vedic for understanding your overall chart and life themes; KP for a specific, pressing question.
- Birth-time sensitivity — both need an accurate birth time, but KP has a clever answer when you don't have one (see below).
Why not just use both?
That is exactly what an experienced astrologer does. Mr. R P Pandey has practised both Vedic and KP astrology since 1982. A good reading often starts with the Vedic picture for context, then uses KP to answer the question you actually came with.
What if you don't know your exact birth time?
This is where KP shines through horary (Prashna) astrology. Instead of your birth chart, a chart is cast for the moment you ask a sincere question. No birth details are required at all. For the many people who don't know their precise time of birth, this is often the most accurate route to a clear answer — and it is the method Mr. Pandey is especially known for.

You can put your question to R P Pandey on WhatsApp. He first checks whether the event is promised, and looks at timing only after that.
