Ruling Planets: The Deciding Key in KP Horary

When you ask an astrologer a question, KP astrology treats the very moment you asked as meaningful. The planets that are "on duty" at that instant are called the Ruling Planets, and they are one of the sharpest tools in KP horary (Prashna).

The idea is simple: a handful of planets are connected to the here and now — the day you are in, and where the Moon and the rising sign (lagna) are at that second. KP says the answer to your question will almost always be tied to these same planets.

The seven ruling planets

For the moment of judgment, the astrologer notes:

• the Day lord — the planet that rules the weekday;
• the Lagna sign lord — ruler of the rising sign;
• the Lagna star lord — the nakshatra (star) lord of the rising point;
• the Lagna sub lord — the KP sub of the rising point;
• the Moon sign lord — ruler of the sign the Moon is in;
• the Moon star lord — the nakshatra lord of the Moon;
• the Moon sub lord — the KP sub of the Moon.

How ruling planets are used

Ruling planets do three jobs in a reading:

1. Confirm the answer. KP decides "yes or no" from the sub-lord of the relevant cusp. If that sub-lord (or the planets that support it) also appears among the ruling planets, the yes becomes much stronger.
2. Pick the real significators. A question often throws up several candidate planets. The ones that are also ruling planets are the ones that will actually act.
3. Fix the timing. The event tends to mature in the dasha–bhukti period, and on the transit day, of the planets that are both significators and ruling planets.

One caution

A ruling planet is not accepted blindly. KP warns that if a ruling planet sits in the star or sub of a retrograde planet, it can mislead and should be treated with care. The cleanest readings are the ones where the same small set of planets keeps showing up — as ruling planets, as significators, as the running dasha, and as the transit on the day.

A simple way to picture it

Think of the ruling planets as the people who happen to be in the room at the moment you ask. If the planet that promises your result is also in the room, the matter moves quickly. If it is nowhere to be seen, the astrologer is right to be cautious — and to wait for a better moment, exactly as Prashna and KP advise.
