Yogakāraka: The Best Planet for Each Lagna (All 12 Ascendants)

Which planet is yogakāraka for your lagna? Why Saturn uplifts Taurus and Libra, Mars uplifts Cancer and Leo, and Venus uplifts Capricorn and Aquarius — and what it means for your dasha.

In the classical Phalit Jyotish tradition, no planet is good or bad by itself. Each lagna (ascendant) hands out the twelve houses to the nine planets differently — and the planet that receives both a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) and a trikoṇa (1, 5, 9) becomes that chart's yogakāraka: the single most constructive planet for that person.

If the rashi lords are the cast of a play, the lagna decides who gets the hero's role.

The yogakāraka for each lagna

  • Cancer (Karka) lagna — Mars. Mars rules the 5th and 10th: fortune and career in one hand. Its daśā brings position, property and confident growth.
  • Leo (Simha) lagna — Mars. Ruling the 4th and 9th, Mars joins home comforts with luck itself. A well-placed Mars is this chart's quiet engine.
  • Taurus (Vṛṣabha) lagna — Saturn. Saturn rules the 9th and 10th — dharma and karma together, the strongest single lordship a planet can hold. Saturn's 19 years often carry a Taurus native to their highest position.
  • Libra (Tulā) lagna — Saturn. The 4th and 5th in Saturn's hands make education, land and recognition grow steadily through its periods.
  • Capricorn (Makara) lagna — Venus. Venus rules the 5th and 10th; its 20-year daśā blends creativity, status and prosperity.
  • Aquarius (Kumbha) lagna — Venus. With the 4th and 9th, Venus brings vehicles, home happiness and fortune flowing together.

The other six lagnas (Aries, Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Pisces) have no single yogakāraka — their kendra and trikoṇa lordships fall to different planets. There the chart's best supporters are the trikoṇa lords, led by the lord of the 9th (bhāgya, fortune) and the 5th, working alongside a strong lagna lord.

Functional friends and teachers

The same lagna-logic sorts every planet in your chart:

  • Lagna lord — always a friend of the chart; its periods restore health, confidence and initiative.
  • Trikoṇa lords (5th, 9th) — bring earned luck: guidance, children, dharma.
  • Kendra lords (1, 4, 7, 10) — build the pillars: home, partnership, career.
  • Upachaya lords (3, 6, 10, 11) — reward effort that compounds over the period.
  • Trik lords (6, 8, 12) and māraka lords (2, 7) — the chart's teachers. Their periods ask for patience, routine and health-care; handled steadily, they consolidate everything the brighter daśās built.

A planet's dignity then adjusts the volume: exalted or own-sign planets deliver early and generously, while a debilitated planet asks for preparation before it pays — slowly, but on unusually solid ground.

Why this matters most in your daśā

The yogakāraka question stops being theory the day its mahādaśā begins. A yogakāraka's period — Saturn for a Libra native, Mars for a Cancer native — is traditionally counted among the finest stretches of the whole 120-year cycle. That is why the first two questions an astrologer asks of any chart are: who is the yogakāraka? and when does its daśā run?

We walk through the full 120-year sequence in Vimshottari Mahādaśā: what each planet's dasha brings, and the finer KP timing tools in The KP Ladder.
