Bedroom Vastu: The Right Direction for Restful Sleep

A simple Vastu guide to the bedroom — the best direction for the room, which way to point your head while sleeping, bed and mirror placement, and gentle fixes for peaceful rest.

We spend a third of our lives asleep, so the bedroom quietly shapes our health, mood and energy. Vastu gives it careful thought — but the rules are gentle and easy, and a less-than-ideal bedroom is simply balanced, never broken.

The best direction for the bedroom

Earth — weight and stability — belongs to the south-west (Nairṛtya), which makes it the ideal place for the master bedroom. It gives the head of the household a grounded, settled corner. Children's bedrooms rest comfortably in the west or north-west. A bedroom in the north-east or south-east is less ideal — but, as always, easily settled.

Which way to sleep — the most useful rule

Even if the room itself isn't perfectly placed, the direction of your head while sleeping is the tip that helps most:

  • Head to the south — the classic choice for deep, restful sleep.
  • Head to the east — good for students, the young, and fresh thinking.
  • Avoid head to the north — tradition holds this disturbs sleep, and many people do sleep less well this way.

This single adjustment — turning the bed so your head points south or east — is free, needs no construction, and often makes the biggest difference.

Bed, mirror and simple placement

  • Place the bed in the south-west of the room, with a solid wall behind the headboard for a sense of support.
  • Avoid a mirror facing the bed. If a wardrobe mirror faces you, cover it at night or angle it away — a small, no-cost fix.
  • Keep the space under the bed clear where you can, especially of clutter and metal; open space rests the mind.
  • Don't sleep with your feet pointing straight out of the door.

A calm, restful room

Beyond direction, the feel of the room matters just as much:

  • Soft, warm light and calm colours — gentle creams, light blues, soft greens — soothe the mind for sleep.
  • Keep it uncluttered. A tidy bedroom is a restful bedroom.
  • Avoid a TV or heavy electronics right beside the bed; if they must be there, switch them off fully at night.
  • Fresh air and a little morning light each day keep the room's energy healthy.

"My bedroom is in the wrong direction"

As with every part of the home — this is nothing to worry about. Very few bedrooms sit exactly in the south-west, and people sleep happily in all of them. Turn the bed so your head points south or east, keep the room calm and clean, soften the light, and the room will rest you well. The full gentle toolkit is in Vastu without breaking walls.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction should I sleep facing?
Sleep with your head toward the south or east for restful sleep. The head to the south is the classic choice for deep rest; east suits students and the young. Avoid the head toward the north, which is traditionally thought to disturb sleep.
Which is the best direction for the master bedroom?
The south-west (Nairritya) — the direction of earth and stability — is ideal for the master bedroom. It gives the head of the family a settled, grounded place. Children's rooms suit the west or north-west.
Should there be a mirror in the bedroom?
It's best to avoid a mirror directly facing the bed. If one is unavoidable, cover it at night or angle it away. This is a gentle, no-cost adjustment — no need to remove a fitted wardrobe.
What if my bedroom isn't in the ideal direction?
It's not a problem to worry about. Adjust what's easy — sleep with the head to the south or east, keep the room calm, uncluttered and softly lit — and the room rests you well, without any construction.
