The 10 Directions and 5 Elements of Vastu — Made Simple
Understand Vastu the easy way: the ten directions, the five elements, and which belongs where — with simple diagrams. Learn the logic once and every Vastu rule makes sense.
People think Vastu is a long list of rules to memorise. It isn't. Underneath everything are just two simple ideas — the directions and the elements. Learn these once, and every other Vastu rule you ever hear will make sense on its own.
The ten directions
Vastu counts ten directions: the four you know, the four corners between them, plus up and down.
- Four main: North, East, South, West.
- Four corners: North-East (Īśāna), South-East (Āgneya), South-West (Nairṛtya), North-West (Vāyavya).
- Two more: Up (the sky / Zenith) and Down (the earth / Nadir).
For arranging a home, the eight around you are what matter. Each has a natural quality — and the reason is simply the sun. The east and north get the gentle morning light; the south and west take the harsh afternoon heat. That single fact explains most of Vastu.
The five elements
Everything in Vastu rests on the five elements (Pancha Mahābhūta) — and each one belongs to a direction:
- Water (Jala) — North-East. Calm and purity. Keep this corner light, clean and open.
- Fire (Agni) — South-East. Energy and cooking. The natural home of the kitchen.
- Earth (Pṛthvī) — South-West. Weight and stability. The place for the master bedroom and heavy things.
- Air (Vāyu) — North-West. Movement and freshness. Good for guests and storage.
- Space (Ākāśa) — Centre. Openness. The middle of the home (Brahmasthān) is kept light and clear.
That is the whole secret. Almost every Vastu rule is just: put each element where it belongs.
Which room goes where
Put the two ideas together and your home arranges itself. Here is the picture at a glance:
- North-East — pooja room, water, kept open (Water).
- North — wealth, cash, the safe (Water · Kubera).
- East — the main entrance and light.
- South-East — the kitchen (Fire).
- South-West — the master bedroom and heavy storage (Earth).
- South — heavy storage.
- West — children's room, dining.
- North-West — guests, storage (Air).
- Centre — kept open and light (Space).
The most important corner
If you remember only one thing, remember the north-east (Īśāna). It catches the healthy morning sun and carries the element of water and calm. Keeping it light, clean and open — no heavy furniture, no clutter, no toilet — lets good energy flow into the whole home. This one corner matters more than any other.
And the gentle truth
No home matches this map perfectly, and none needs to. The map is a guide, not a rulebook. Where a room sits in a less-ideal spot, small corrections — light, colour, placement, cleanliness — set it right, as we explain in Vastu without breaking walls. Start from balance, never from fear.

Frequently asked questions
- How many directions are there in Vastu?
- Ten: the four main directions (north, east, south, west), the four corners (north-east, south-east, south-west, north-west), plus up (sky) and down (earth). Most home rules use the eight around you.
- Which is the most auspicious direction in Vastu?
- The north-east (Ishana) is considered the most auspicious — the lightest, purest corner, the direction of water and calm. It is the classic place for the pooja room and for keeping open and clean.
- What are the five elements and their directions?
- Water — north-east; Fire — south-east; Earth — south-west; Air — north-west; and Space — the centre, kept open. Almost every Vastu rule is simply placing each element where it belongs.
- Why does the north-east matter so much?
- The north-east receives the gentle, healthy morning sun and is the element of water and calm. Keeping it light, clean and open lets good energy enter the home — which is why Vastu protects this corner most.
